Treetops Hospice, Risley

When one of our partner companies approached us about a project for Treetops Hospice, we immediately knew we wanted to be involved. The DIY SOS team was working on a special build in Risley, Derbyshire in support of BBC Children in Need. This incredible initiative focused on creating a purpose-built facility to provide support and counselling for children and young people coping with traumatic bereavement.

Curated by interior designer Gaby Blackman, the project required lighting that not only complemented the aesthetic of the space but also delivered meaningful benefits for the children and families receiving therapy. This is where Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) played a vital role.

HCL is an innovative approach to lighting design that considers both the physiological and psychological effects of light. By aligning artificial lighting with the body’s natural circadian rhythm, HCL supports well-being, health, and performance, an important consideration for spaces dedicated to healing and recovery.

The Solution

For this project, we specified our STIRLING range of POE fittings, equipped with tuneable white boards and daylight-harvesting sensors. Powered via a Smartengine using Power over Ethernet (POE) technology, this system provides an energy-efficient way to operate all lighting components.

The combination of tuneable white boards and smart control provides the full benefits of HCL while also reducing energy consumption. By automatically dimming when natural daylight is sufficient, the system ensures the right balance of comfort, sustainability, and efficiency for this truly special space.
