Sustainable Energy Consumption
The energy consumption of the lighting in a commercial premises can start off as a relatively low percentage of the buildings total annual energy consumption in the first few years after construction, however that has the potential to climb to more than 50% of the buildings total annual energy consumption after 50 years in operation. What can you, as an installer, do to minimise the energy consumption of a buildings lighting? Utilising the latest lighting technology, for example LED lighting will help to future proof a buildings lighting. Reducing maintenance costs and increasing the life span of the building’s lighting. Starting off on the right footing with commercial lighting, for example choosing products with a low manufacturing and logistical carbon footprint, will also decrease the total energy consumption of a building’s lighting across its entire life span.
How do you get your client’s buy in?
It’s more important than ever for commercial premises to be energy efficient, the environmental benefits are huge and this in turn can massively reduce a businesses operational costs. Upgrading to LED Lighting accounts for around 15% of global electricity consumption and 5% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. A global shift to LED’s could reduce CO2 emissions by 800 million tons per year. LED bulbs are 80 to 90% efficient, this means 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light and only 20% is lost to heat. In comparison, an incandescent bulb is only 20% efficient, so only 20% of the electrical energy is converted to light and 80% is lost to heat. There is no question that switching to LED technology is a great way to increase energy efficiency and future proof a building.
